National Stroke Clot Retrieval Fellowship announcement
NATIONAL STROKE CLOT RETRIEVAL/NEUROINTERVENTION FELLOWSHIP INVITATION FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
Background:
Stroke Clot Retrieval is a recently introduced technique that has transformed the treatment of acute ischaemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion, resulting in profound reduction in long term disability. The National Stroke Clot Retrieval Improvement Program has recognised a shortfall in suitably trained operators to perform Stroke Clot Retrieval (SCR) in New Zealand. A training position has been created that will provide suitable applicants with the opportunity to gain experience in SCR and other neurointerventions at all three SCR Centres (Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch).
Eligibility:
The applicant will be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand. They will have completed their specialty training in radiology, neurology, or neurosurgery by the proposed start date. In some circumstances the first year of the followship could count as a non-core training year, however, this will need prior approval by the relevant college. Preference will be given to applicants who plan to contribute to an SCR service at a site with a deficit in suitably trained SCR operators. Knowledge of neuroanatomy, neuropathology, neurophysiology, an understanding of current evidence for SCR and clinical acumen are essential. Previous experience or observation of neurointerventional procedures is desirable. Experience or interest in research related to stroke or neurointervention is desirable.
Application Guidelines:
The application will consist of the following:
1) A letter of application describing the applicant’s reasons for applying for the fellowship.
2) A support letter from the head of their department.
3) An up-to-date curriculum vitae.
4) Two referee reports (one of whom should be a neurointerventionalist).
The applications will be ranked and interviews will be offered by consensus agreement of the selection panel. Applicants will be scored on the basis of their written application and interview.

Overview of the Position:
The successful applicant will spend time at the three SCR centres in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. The fellowship will be for one to two years. The disposition of the fellow’s time will be tailored to their skills, experience, and social circumstances.
